In the wake of the Supreme Court’s most significant free speech decisions in years, eight of the nation’s preeminent First Amendment scholars will gather at the University of Virginia School of Law to reexamine the theoretical foundations of our constitutional commitment to free speech. The symposiumhosted by the Virginia Law Reviewwill feature Chief Judge Alex Kozinski of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit as its keynote speaker. Participants include: Dean Robert Post, Yale Law School, Eugene Volokh, UCLA School of Law, Fred Schauer, Virginia Law School, Vincent Blasi, Columbia Law School, James Weinstein, Arizona State University College of Law, Steven Shiffrin, Cornell Law School, Susan Williams, Indiana University Maurer School of Law, Seana Shiffrin, UCLA School of Law and UCLA Philosophy.
The scholars will debate the proper theoretical foundations for the constitutional protection of free speech. They will also examine the impact of these theoretical debates on recent and upcoming free speech cases, including Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission (campaign finance), Holder v. Humanitarian Law Project (material support to terrorists), Christian Legal Society v. Martinez (freedom of assembly and freedom of religion for student organizations), Stevens v. United States (animal crush videos), and Snyder v. Phelps (funeral protesting).
This event is open to the public. The Virginia Law Review hopes you will attend what promises to be an engaging day of thought and discussion. The written symposium pieces will appear in the Virginia Law Review's May 2011 issue in Volume 97.
